I'LL TELL YOU IF IT'S YOU
I'LL TELL YOU IF IT'S YOU
Acrylic gouache, pencil, ink on panel
16 x 12 inches
2022

I should have gotten your number at baggage claim
Nothing has been said outside of hello
I should have introduced myself
I was the tattooed guy in the hoodie
I was the gentleman walking my dog
I was the girl in the purple coat waiting outside the theater
We looked at each other and smiled
You were wearing a soft pink sweatshirt
You were a handsome bald man in shorts
You looked confused but it was endearing
I waved and you did the same back
We were both in work clothes
I have not stopped thinking about you since that moment
You were short and older
You were pushing two carts
You took a picture of yourself on the deck before dark over the fog and river
I let you go ahead of me in line
My memory refuses to let you go
Was that you who just rang me up
I was driving a convertible
I was in the black Mercedes at the pump behind you
I tried to say hi in the home section
Tell me where we saw each other and I’ll tell you if it’s you
